Work is finally underway to transform the degenerated Blacon Parade estate near Chester.
Part of the project will involve the creation of new homes, which may lead to an increase in demand for those who provide loft and kitchen conversions in Cheshire.
Blacon used to be under Neighbourhood Management Pathfinder, a government-supported initiative designed to help deprived communities. Redevelopment of the area was part of that scheme and English Partnership arranged finance for the programme.
However, delays were caused by the economic situation and Homes and Communities Agency replaced English Partnerships. It then chose not to make any funds available.
There were worries that work would never get started on the estate before the European Union provided the necessary finances. Now the transformation is no longer just a pipe dream.
New homes, a medical centre, community buildings and shops will replace the existing decrepit buildings.
Cheshire West and Cheshire Councillor Reggie Jones represents Blacon. He said:
“This is the start of endless opportunities and is about creating a positive impression of the Blacon community.
“Residents and agencies have worked tirelessly for many years to make the Parade redevelopment a reality. Over the next two years we will see a great transformation.”
Around 60 affordable houses will be developed along with a market area, while the homes and shops that will survive the redevelopment will be upgraded.
The programme will be completed in phases with the homes scheduled for completion in March 2015. The development as a whole is set to be completed in October of the same year.
